This
document is intended to answer frequently asked questions about FW Ultimate. Please note that this document is a work
in progress; if there are questions you'd like answered, please don't
hesitate to ask the league
coordinators. How
can I ensure that I am placed on the same team as someone else? What information can other
people see in Leaguerunner? How can I ensure that I am placed on the same team as someone else?Generally, it is easiest if these requests are kept to a minimum. If you feel that you must be placed on the same team as someone else, please email your request to balboajp@hotmail.com. How will teams be chosen?
Core Groups - Current captains will have the option of holding a core of up to 5 players (not including themselves) from their roster last season. This core may be made up of anyone subject to the following requirements: · They all must have played on your team last season. · They all must have played on your team last season. · They must want to play with you again. · They must be registered for the league, so that you can add them to your roster in LeagueRunner. · Including the captain, the core must have as many women as men, less one.
All captains needs to have a co-captain. For returning captains, this is someone from your core group. Also, male captains need to select a female co-captain, and female captains need to select a male. The co-captain should be someone who has some experience in ultimate is willing to help the captain select a team. This means is that every team should already have at least 2 players, one man and one woman, prior to the draft; of course, teams could have as many as 6 players prior to the draft (core group). Schedule - There will be a clinic/pickup game on
5/26, a Wednesday night. This gives new players a chance to see the game,
captains a chance to meet the players they don't know, and everyone a chance
to socialize and learn in a non-competitive setting. Player registration will
close on 5/31, the following Monday, and returning captains must have their
core players (the keepers) selected by "Team" signups - Simply put, we're discouraging team signups, but we do have the capacity this season to add 2 teams (for 8 total), we'll work with the first two groups that take one of the following options: 1. Submit a "core" group of 6 players, which must be 3 men and 3 women. This includes both male and female co captains. Then you help us recruit more players, and participate in the draft just like the rest of the teams. 2. Submit a roster, of 10-16 players, meeting the following three conditions: o Average skill level between 4 and 6, according to the scale at leaguerunner. o A minimum of 5 women o If you have less players than the league average, you agree to participate in the draft to finish out your roster Draft Rules · All players who are not captains and are not part of a team's core will be in the draft pool · Small groups of people wishing to stay together will be taken into consideration. · Draft order will be determined by the team's average skill level (lowest picks first), based on the ratings of all players on the roster. · Player rankings are subject to discussion at the draft as people's self-ratings can be very subjective. · After the first two draft rounds (one men, one women) are conducted, team averages will be recalculated. · There will be separate drafting rounds for men and for women to ensure that everyone has an equal shot at quality players of each gender · A team that retains players in a "core" will lose draft picks until everyone has the same number of players. So, in other words, if a captain chooses to keep the maximum of 4 players, themself, and a co-captain in their core group, they'd "miss" the first four rounds of the draft. · All captains will have a list of available players, their approximate age (i.e. 18-25, 26-30, 30-40, etc.), height, experience, and skill rating. Friendly cooperation between the captains is encouraged. · There will be pizza and beverages at the draft. Alden has volunteered his house, as we've got easy access to any last minute adds, and he can update the teams as the draft occurs. · Time limits for picks will be implemented if we need to, in order to keep things reasonable. With some preparation by the captains, the whole draft shouldn't take more than a couple hours.... but if things are starting to look ugly, plan on a 2-minute per pick limit for the first two rounds, and 1-minute-per-pick after that. · As a captain, if you know that you won't be able to make it to the draft (currently planned for 6/2), now is the time to let us know; last minute draft schedule change could be very difficult to make happen. What information can other people see in Leaguerunner?
When you are entering / editing your personal
information, there are check boxes next to your email address and phone
numbers. If you check one of those boxes, that piece of information will be
publicly available to anyone logged into the system. Anything without a check
box next to it is always hidden (besides your name). There are some exceptions to the above rule: 1. If you are a coordinator, your email address is viewable by all captains in your tier. 2. If you are a captain, your email address is viewable by all your players, your coordinator, and other captains in your tier. 3. If you are a captain, you can see the email address for every player on your team. 4. The system administrator can see everything. What's
the SBF?
The SBF is the "Spence Balance Factor". The Leaguerunner implementation of the SBF is a straight
average of the point differentials (as a positive number) of all games played.
In the case of the League SBF, this is all games in the league. For
the Team SBF, this is all games played by that team. Assuming that this measurement has actual statistical validity (something that has not yet been proven), these numbers can be used to measure the 'closeness' of game scores for a tier/division or a team. Tiers with lower SBF values generally have closer games, and thus are more balanced. Teams whose SBF is much higher than the SBF for the tier they're in may be good candidates for moving up or down (depending on their win record) to another tier. What's
the 'rating'?
The rating, as shown on the team view page and on the
standings, is a measure of the team's past performance. Higher ratings
indicate that a team has done well against its previous opponents and should
probably do well against opponents with lower ratings in the future. The rating system used by Leaguerunner is based on the Elo system which was originally designed for ranking chess players. The system was adapted for team sports in 1997 by The World Football Elo Ratings site, and further modified to be more applicable for Ultimate by the author of Leaguerunner. Here's how it works. Each team starts at 1500, and moves up or down from there based on game performance. Each game is worth a base value, adjusted for strength of schedule (based on your rating as compared to your opponent's rating) with bonuses given for higher point-differentials (games won by a difference of more than 1/3 the winning score ). The winning team gets the value for that game added to their rating, and the losing team gets it subtracted. In this manner, "upset" wins are worth more than "expected" wins for rating purposes, so if a team with a 1500 rating beats one with a 1600 rating, it's a higher-value game than if the 1600-rated team beat the 1500-rated one. Further details, as well as the mathematical formulas
used to calculate the rating, will be posted here later. |
